The university has over 500 student organizations covering various academic, cultural, social, and recreational interests. The university fosters a culture of learning, discovery, freedom, leadership, individual opportunity and responsibility.

One of the most visible aspects of UT Austin’s culture is its athletic program. The Texas Longhorns compete in NCAA Division I sports as members of the Big 12 Conference (until June 30, 2024) and the Southeastern Conference (as of July 1, 2024). The Longhorns have won four NCAA Division I National Football Championships, six NCAA Division I National Baseball Championships, thirteen NCAA Division I National Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, and many more titles in other sports. The Longhorns also have a fierce rivalry with other schools in Texas and beyond, such as Texas A&M University, Oklahoma University, Baylor University, Texas Tech University, University of Southern California, University of Notre Dame, etc. The Longhorns are supported by a loyal fan base that wears burnt orange and white colors and cheers with the \”Hook ’em Horns\” hand gesture and slogan.

Another critical aspect of UT Austin’s culture is its connection with the city of Austin. Austin is the capital city of Texas and one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country. Austin is known for its live music scene, its technology industry, its festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL), its food trucks, its outdoor activities, its environmental awareness, its political activism, its quirky personality, etc. UT Austin students can enjoy the benefits of living in a dynamic and diverse city that offers many opportunities for learning, entertainment, networking, and civic engagement.
