If you are looking for a place to explore in Austin, Texas, consider visiting Huston-Tillotson University (HT). This private, historically black university has a rich history and a diverse culture. HT is the first institution of higher learning in Austin, established in 1875 by the merger of two colleges: Samuel Huston College and Tillotson College. HT is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the United Negro College Fund. HT offers bachelor’s degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, science, and technology and a master’s degree in educational leadership. HT also has alternative teacher certification and academic programs for undergraduates pursuing post-graduate degrees in law and medicine.

History

HT traces its roots to two separate institutions: Samuel Huston College and Tillotson College. Samuel Huston College was founded in 1876 by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a normal school for freedmen. Tillotson College was founded in 1877 by the American Missionary Association of the Congregational Church as a coeducational school for African Americans. Both colleges operated independently until 1952 when they merged to form Huston-Tillotson College. The merger was motivated by the need to consolidate resources and avoid duplication of programs. The new college adopted the motto “In union, strength” and continued the legacy of both institutions in providing quality education for African Americans in Texas and beyond.
